BYU Advances To Regional Championship

AUSTIN -- BYU scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including the game-winner by Jessica Dugas on a sacrifice fly by JC Clayton with the bases loaded to defeat No. 12 Texas 9-8 on Friday and advance to the championship game of the NCAA Austin Regional.

As the only remaining undefeated team in the Austin Regional, BYU will have two chances on Saturday to advance to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional. The Cougars will play East Carolina, 3-0 winners over Iona and 1-0 winners against Texas, at 1:00 p.m. CDT.

Loading the bases for the third consecutive inning in the bottom of the seventh, junior Kristin Delahoussaye turned an 8-6 deficit into a tied game with a double deep to centerfield, sending home Delaney Willard and Tiffany Messerschmidt.

With Delahoussaye on second and Dugas at third, freshman JC Clayton fouled off the first pitch she saw down the leftfield line. Dugas tagged up after the catch by the Texas outfielder, beating a late tag to give BYU its first-ever two wins in its first two games at an NCAA Regional.

"It's a terrific feeling to beat a very good Texas team," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "Several times we could have given up, but they fought hard all seven innings every pitch."

Angeline Quiocho gave BYU a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, launching her third grand slam of the season, tying a BYU single-season record for her NCAA-leading 27th homer on the year.

But BYU saw its three-run lead quickly vanish in the ensuing inning as the Texas hitters found gap after gap. A two-run home run by Amy Hooks began the run; four singles and an error later the Cougars found themselves in an 8-5 hole.

In the bottom of the sixth, Quiocho walked with the bases loaded to send in a run, but the next three BYU batters retired without a threat, leaving the Cougars down 8-6 heading into the final inning.

Junior Jessica Fitu put BYU on top 1-0 in the second inning, towering a solo shot for her ninth home run of the season.

Freshman Hannah Howell earned the win in the circle in her first NCAA action, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no runs and striking out one. Starting pitcher Paige Affleck threw four innings of shutout ball before being relieved in the fifth, earning four strikeouts and giving up one earned run.

"It was big to come out and do what Hannah did," Eakin said. "It was a big stage for her and she did a great job."

BYU lit up Big 12 Freshman and Pitcher of the Year Blaire Luna for seven earned runs on nine hits and six walks in 5.2 innings. The Cougars' nine hits equaled the most against Luna in Texas' 57 games this year while BYU's seven earned runs tied for the most given up by the freshman.

Dugas went 3-for-3 with three runs while Quiocho recorded five RBI going 1-for-2 with a walk. Delahoussaye finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run.
