PROVO -- Amanda Kellum led BYU (34-10, 7-2) to a 12-4 victory over Colorado State (26-17, 4-5) with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday at Gail Miller Field.

“We competed for the entire game today,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “We were consistent from start to finish and I am very satisfied with our effort and the result.”

The senior's home run was the sixth of the season for Kellum and was the third Cougar homer of the game. This is the 10th game this season BYU has ended the game early due to the mercy rule.

Caschjen Atagi drove in the sixth inning's first run for BYU with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield to give BYU a 7-4 lead. After Jessica Fitu hit an RBI single, Kellum came to the plate sent the ball over the centerfield fence for the game-ending home run, her only hit of the game.

“Amanda is always asking questions in the dugout before her at-bats,” Eakin said. “This time she went up there, executed very well and got the job done.”

Angeline Quiocho went 2-for-3, including a home run, adding two RBI and two runs for the Cougars while Kristin Delahoussaye went a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI and one run.

Jessica Dugas began the scoring in the second inning with an infield single that drove in Caschjen Atagi to put the Cougars up 1-0.

BYU pitcher Paige Affleck continued to deal through the third inning, recording her fourth and fifth strikeouts of the night in the top half of the inning. Quiocho opened the game up in the bottom of the third with her 19th home run of the season, a two-run monster shot that careened off the left centerfield lights and pushed the Cougars ahead 3-0.

BYU exteneded its lead in the bottom half of the fourth, with a triple by Delahoussaye, her first of the season, driving in two runs to put the Cougars up 5-0. Colorado State pitcher Kel Eubanks then allowed the bases to fill up and walked in Andrea Ramirez for the sixth BYU run.

The Cougars’ defensive dominance ended in the top of the fifth after Affleck gave up a single and two walks to load the bases. Ram senior Allison Majam followed up with a and slam off Affleck to bring Colorado State within two at 6-4.

No Cougars were able to cross the plate in the bottom half of the fifth, but Affleck regained her composure in the sixth and shut down the Rams again with her ninth and 10th strikeouts ending the inning.

Eakin and the Cougars continue their season Friday when MWC rival New Mexico comes to Provo for a 6:00 p.m. game. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv.
