Two More Wins in St. George

ST. GEORGE -- BYU finished its pre-conference tournament season in winning fashion, beating Idaho State 10-6, and Loyola Marymount 4-0.

Both games portrayed the Cougars' (23-8) ability to play with consistency and with an united effort as no single player significantly stuck out from the rest.

However, these combined wins will definitely motivate the team to carry this winning mentality into the conference season.

In their first game against Idaho State, the Cougars scored in every inning they had an at-bat.

In the bottom of the first, J.C. Clayton walked and then stole second during Angie Quiocho's at-bat.

With two on, Andrea Ramirez stepped to the plated and shot the ball right down the left field line sending it deep enough for Clayton to round third and score the Cougars first run.

One batter later, Jessica Fitu flied out to short stop which allowed Quiocho to tag third and score.

In the second and third innings, BYU's run were scored from two home runs by Caschjen Atagi in the second over the left field wall, and Ramirez with a lead-off homer to left-center in the third.

Bengal errors played a part in the Cougars' runs scored in the fourth and fifth as hard hit balls caused fielding and throwing errors.

In the bottom of the sixth, BYU scored its final three runs thanks to smart base running, selfless plays and great pitch selection from the plate.

In its second game against Loyola Marymount, BYU scored all four of its runs by the end of the third inning.

The scoring started at the top of the second when Ramirez hit a double down the left field line.

Immediately following this lead-off double, Fitu brought Ramirez home with a hard-hit single to right-center field.

At the top of the third inning, Quiocho blasted a three-run homer to deep left-center field making the score 4-0 in BYU's favor and it remained the same for the rest of the game.

In the end, the Cougars came away from St. George with a 3-1 tournament record with their only loss coming via Cal State Bakersfield.

BYU returns home to play in its home opener against Southern Utah on Wednesday, April 7, at 4 p.m. (MST) at Gail Miller Field.
