Affleck and Quiocho Receive Conference Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU senior outfielder Angeline Quiocho and junior right-hander Paige Affleck have been named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Quiocho, from Walnut, Calif., batted .364 (4-for-11) with three homers, one double, six RBI and six runs scored, as the Cougars won the Stanford Invitational title with a 4-0 record last week in Palo Alto, Calif., including an upset victory over then-No. 9 Stanford.

"Angie is in the groove right now and playing with tremendous confidence right now," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "She is a great leader who is able to get big hits and make great defensive plays."

She also tallied a 1.273 slugging percentage and .562 on-base percentage on the week. Quiocho went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, one double, four RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base in BYU’s 5-0 win over UC Santa Barbara. In a 3-2, eight-inning win over Santa Clara, she hit a solo homer, while scoring two runs of her own.

Quiocho concluded the Stanford Invitational with a 1-for-2 performance from the plate in a 3-1 Cougar win over Pacific. She smacked another solo home run and scored two more runs vs. the Tigers.

Defensively, she had three putouts and 17 assists, with one error over four games from the third base position.

This is the second time this season that Quiocho has received this award.

Affleck, a New Harmony, Utah, native, went 3-0 in three appearances for the Cougars at the Stanford Invitational.

"Paige threw exceptionally well this past weekend and really shut No. 9 Stanford down at their home field which is a huge accomplishment," Eakin said. "She is really carrying our team from the circle and we expect big things from her this season."

In 14.2 innings on the mound she struck out six batters, while giving up 10 hits, five walks and three earned runs. In BYU’s 4-2 upset victory over then-No. 9 Stanford, she collected the complete game win after scattering six hits and giving up two runs while striking out three.

Against Santa Clara, Affleck came on in relief in the top of the eighth inning and the score knotted at 2-2. After walking the first batter to load the bases, she forced two groundouts to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Cougars went on to win the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Affleck collected her second complete game victory in BYU’s 3-0 win over Pacific. In 7.0 innings of work, she struck out three, while giving up just four hits and one earned run.
