Day Two Ends in Split
PALM SPRINGS -- With a come-from-behind win over Cal Poly SLO, thanks to Caschjen Atagi’s game-winning two RBI single, the Cougars split their doubleheader as they beat Cal Poly SLO 3-2, and lost to No. 2 Arizona 8-0.
"Although it doesn't look like it from the score, we did play a lot better than yesterday and I am proud of our team for competing they way they did," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We need to realize that we belong competing against teams of this caliber. We have learned, and we will grow from these games and return stronger than before."
In game one, the first six innings were fairly quiet for both teams. The Mustangs were first to attack with a one-run homer in the first, and then one more run scored in the fifth.
With the score 0-2 in the top of the seventh, BYU (10-4) rallied offensively scoring three runs and winning the game.
The Cougar offensive started when Angie Quiocho doubled to left field, followed by a Jessica Fitu single to center bringing Quiocho home. Andrea Ramirez reached first on a fielder’s choice and then brought out as Jessica Dugas came in to pinch run for Ramirez.
Next up, Alexandra Hudson walked and then Amanda Kellum singled to right field.
With one out, and the bases loaded, Atagi blasted a single out to left field sending Dugas and Hudson home and giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly SLO threatened with two runners on, at third and first, but Christie Zinanti ended the game, and the inning by striking out her last two batters.
In the second game of their doubleheader, the Cougars struggled offensively against No. 2 Arizona.
With only two hits in the game from J.C. Clayton and Andrea Ramirez, BYU was silenced at the plate by Arizona pitcher Kenzie Fowler.
BYU pitcher Paige Affleck started the game, pitching 2.2 innings against the Wildcats, facing 17 batters and striking out four before leaving the game.
Once again, BYU freshman pitcher, Hannah Howell, came in to throw against her second nationally ranked team of her collegiate career.
The Cougars hope to leave Palm Springs with a winning tournament record as they return for their last game Saturday against Long Island at 10 a.m. (PST).
