PROVO -- After a successful season for the BYU softball team including their fifth-consecutive appearance at Regionals, one player showed her talents both on the field, and in the classroom by making the Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team.

Paige Affleck, a right-handed pitcher, and a sophomore from New Harmony was the only player honored on the team for her academic success as she earned a 3.60 grade point average studying exercise science.

Affleck served as an anchor to the Cougars’, and ended the season with a winning record of 19-10 with a 2.07 ERA and 213 strikeouts spanning 202.2 innings.

One hundred and forty eight athletes were recognized from BYU for academic success in 2009, as the Cougars continue to lead the Mountain West Conference in student athletes honored into the Academic All-MWC Team.

“We are very pleased with the success of our student-athletes in the classroom and in competition, said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. “Both endeavors are equally important to us at BYU and demonstrate the quality of our student-athletes.”

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at a college institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on the athletic team.
