Affleck Stuns Colorado State
PROVO -- The BYU softball team (39-15, 12-1) quietly put Colorado State away, 4-1, after an impressive display pitching from BYU sophomore Paige Affleck.
“It was a fun game,” Affleck said. “Colorado State’s lineup was full of talented batters and I just tried to maintain my focus.”
Affleck, who pitched her 18th complete game, kept the Rams scoreless until the top of the sixth where she gave up one run.
Even after a 23 minute sun delay at the end of the third, Affleck stepped back on the mound and continued to work at the Rams lineup, one player at a time. She remained calm, yet explosive amid the constant CSU dugout banter.
“We coasted a bit through the game but we found the talent to win,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “We will find the motivation in the final game of the series tomorrow.”
The righthander’s effort was matched by a three-run fourth inning that secured a 4-0 lead.
Kristin Delahoussaye got the Cougars started with a leadoff double before the Rams forced error brought her home.
In the bottom of the fourth, Stephanie Hopkins stepped up to the plate and chipped a hit right past the first baseman’s head. Two batters later Monica Gonzales blasted a line drive splitting the left and center fielders resulting in a double, and brining Hopkins home to end a two inning Cougar scoring drought. Immediately following, Delahoussaye slammed a single to short centerfield, and Tiffany Messerschmidt walked.
With bases loaded and only one out, Angeline Quiocho pushed to a full count before shooting a grounder up the middle to bring Gonzales home. Next batter, Jessica Purcell, hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Delahoussaye. The RBI marked her 80th RBI for the season, two shy from tying the BYU record set by assistant coach Ianeta Le’i in 2006. The inning ended with bases loaded after a Coreen Lopez popped out.
In the top of the sixth inning, Colorado State started to rally with three base hits, resulting in one run, but Affleck regained composure and struck out two of the three last batters she faced and forced a ground out to end the inning.
Affleck ended the night one strike out short of her personal best with 11, giving up only one run and five hits. The Cougars finished the night with four runs off of eight hits and two errors. Of those Cougars who got hits were Delahoussaye who had three, Quiocho added two, and Gonzales and Hopkins each tallied one.
BYU will conclude the regular season with a Saturday afternoon celebration. Both BYU seniors will be honored following the games and the whole team will be recognized for its accomplishment of clinching the MWC title. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
