Win Streak Continues

PROVO -- Back-to-back wins against Utah Valley Thursday extended the BYU winning streak to 15, clawing past the Wolverines 12-1 and 12-4. BYU now stands at 34-14 while UVU falls to 16-25.

“It’s nice to score 24 runs but we can play a lot better than we did, and we need to,” said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. “They played sloppy in the second game and we’re going to have to do the little things to continue the roll we’re on.”

The first game was led by Angeline Quiocho, Krista Hicks and Jessica Purcell who each scored home runs for the Cougars, with pitcher Christie Zinanti throwing a two-hitter to hold off the Wolverines.

The second game was tight until five runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth to end the game with the eight-run rule.

In the first game, Purcell and Hicks both tallied three RBI while Quiocho chalked up two. Hicks and Tiffany Messerschmidt both scored two runs for the Cougars to help with the 12-1 win.

Game two was led by Purcell going 2-for-4, tallying three RBI. Delahoussaye and Ramirez also had two runs apiece.

“Jessica’s play speaks for itself,” said Eakin. “We gave her a rest behind the plate, but she continued to hit. She is one of the catalysts of our offense.”

Zinanti started out the doubleheader with one strikeout and no one getting on base in the top of the first. Leading off for the Cougars was Delahoussaye, who struck the ball up the right center ally for a standup double. Messerschmidt followed with an infield single, putting two Cougars on base for Purcell to smack a two-run homer down the left base line.

Utah Valley got its first runner on base with back-to-back singles and then a single off a BYU error on Coreen Lopez' at-bat. Zinanti then recorded her second and third strikeouts of the game. UVU scored its only run of the game by a passed ball off the glove of catcher Cydney Allen.

In the bottom of the second Hicks was given a free pass on balls, followed by Monica Gonzales' bunt single. Hicks then scored off a single up the middle by Delahoussaye. After walking one Wolverine, BYU was up to bat again in the third, Andrea Ramirez leading off with a single to left field. Lopez followed with a double down the left field line to bring home Ramirez. Allen was walked, putting two Cougars on base for a two-run home run by Hicks to the right-field fence after a full count.

Delahoussaye singled up the middle later in the third to get on base, followed by Messerschmidt who singled to the pitcher on a full count, Delahoussaye getting out at second. Quiocho then smacked the ball over the center field fence for a two-run home run.

After two more strikeouts in the top of the fourth, Amanda Vance singled over the second baseman’s glove, with Whitney Nix-Thomas walking after her. Vance made the score 9-1 as Allen hit a RBI double left of center field. Jessica Dugas was up to bat when Nix-Thomas scored on a wild pitch, Dugas then walking. UVU then subbed a new pitcher who got out three Cougars in a row to end the fourth.

Zinanti ended the game in the fifth with three strikeouts, brining her total to nine on the afternoon.

The Cougars will next host in-state rival Utah Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gail Miller Field.
