SALT LAKE -- The Cougars continued to dominate in Mountain West Conference play on Friday when they defeated Utah, 11-2. Junior Christie Zinanti earned her 46th career win, placing her top the BYU softball all-time career wins list.

Zinanti increased to 14-7 on the season. She was charged with two runs on a pair of solo homers, allowing six hits and striking out seven.

Coreen Lopez hit a three-run homer and Kristin Delahoussaye hit a solo bomb followed by a two-run double. The Cougars are a perfect 4-0 in conference play, increasing to 28-14 overall.

“We continue to put together all aspects of the game,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “It was a complete team effort. We pitched well, we hit well, we defended well and we played the way we are capable of.”

Krista Hicks’ standup double in the second inning brought in two runs to get the momentum swinging. Jessica Purcell reached base on an error before Stephanie Hopkins walked to set the table for Hicks, who launched a ball in the left-center gap.

Delahoussaye’s leadoff homer in the top of the third inning gave way to a 3-0 lead. The long ball marked her second homer of the season. In 2008 she hit a similar homer in the seventh inning on the May 2, 2008, matchup between the Cougars and the Utes that sparked BYU’s come-from-behind rally.

After throwing three scoreless innings, Zinanti gave up a leadoff homer just inside of the left field foul line. After fanning the following batter the Utes got a hold of another ball, this time taking to the opposite side cutting the BYU lead to one run.

A six-run fifth inning sealed the BYU lead. Highlighted by Lopez’ three-run homer to right-center, the Cougars batted through the lineup, totaling six hits, including an RBI double from Andrea Ramirez and a two-run double from Delahoussaye.

The Cougars grabbed two insurance runs in the top if the seventh. Quiocho brought in a run on an infield single, while Gonzales beat out a bunt to reach base and scored on a fielding error.

Christie Zinanti retired the side, with the final out made at the plate to secure an 11-2 victory.

The Cougars continue MWC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face the Utes in Salt Lake City. The game will be the second in a three-game Deseret Frist Duel series.
