Quiocho Earns MWC Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior third baseman/centerfielder Angeline Quiocho and San Diego State sophomore righthander Samantha Beasley have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
“Angie [Quiocho] is starting to play really well since battling against her fall injury,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “She is back and she is a big offensive threat for our team.”
Quiocho, who hails from Walnut, Calif., batted .615 against conference foes Colorado State and New Mexico. The junior went 8-for-13 on the week, hitting her first collegiate grand slam against Colorado State on Thursday. After doubling to centerfield in the third inning, she hit a home run with the bases loaded, giving BYU an 11-0 lead. Quiocho also hit a triple in each of the games at New Mexico.
On Friday, she hit a two-run triple in her first at-bat, as the Cougars defeated the Lobos, 13-4. In the second game in Albuquerque, her two-run homer gave BYU a 5-2 lead, before a triple brought in two additional runs. She finished Saturday's contest going 3-for-5, a double shy of the cycle. Quiocho has now hit a home run in four of her last five games and is riding a season-best six-game hitting streak.
The Cougars take a break from MWC play when they face cross-town foe Utah Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday. They return to conference play on Friday and Saturday in Salt Lake City, playing the first two of a three-game Deseret First Duel series against Utah.
