Road Trip Ends In Split

SACRAMENTO -- The BYU softball team concluded a 33-game road trip by splitting two games on Saturday to improve to 19-14 on the season. The Cougars defeated Dartmouth, 8-0, before falling to falling to Cal Poly, 4-1.

Sophomore Paige Affleck earned the win against Dartmouth as the BYU offense generated enough firepower to eight-run the Big Green. She struck out eight batters, allowing only two hits over five innings.

Seniors Stephanie Hopkins and Monica Gonzales led the team. Hopkins was 3-for-3 with a trey of singles and one RBI, while Gonzales was 2-for-2, drawing one walk and driving in two runners.

In the bottom of the second inning freshman Coreen Lopez hit a solo homer to get BYU on the board. Gonzales brought in another run to take a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars added two runs in the fourth inning as Gonzales drove in another run and sophomore Krisitn Delahoussaye brought in a run on a fielder’s choice.

The fifth inning yeilded four more runs for BYU to take the necessary 8-0 lead to call the game. Senior Andrea Ramirez doubled to drive in a run, Hopkins singled to left field for an RBI, Dartmouth walked in a run and sophomore pinch hitter Caschjen Davis drove a ball into the right-center gap for the final run of the game.

In game two of Saturday’s events, the Cougars dueled the Mustangs until a three-run fifth inning broke the scoreless game.

A walk and two singles gave way to two runs while the third run reached on a defensive error.

Another walk sparked an insurance run for Cal Poly in the sixth, as the baserunner advance to scoring position on a groundout and scored on a single.

The Cougars mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when they managed to load the bases with no outs. One run scored on a ground out, but three quick outs ended the game.

Despite the loss, both Ramirez and Lopez led the team going 2-for-3 from the plate. Lopez was the only Cougar to hit an extra base hit.

BYU returns to the diamond for its season opener against Boise State at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
