USF Underarmour Showcase Up Next
PROVO -- The BYU softball team, 14-11, heads to Tampa, Fla., for the USF Underarmour Showcase, where the Cougars are slated to play four games beginning on Friday.
“We are excited to continue to play at the level we have been performing at,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “I’m pleased with the way the team has been playing and we’re improving as we inch closer to conference play.”
The Cougars will first face Hofstra, 4-8, on Friday at 4 p.m. (ET). In BYU’s only meeting with Hofstra in 2001, when they closed the season with a 4-2 defeat.
In the nightcap of the day’s events BYU will play Indiana, 1-15, at 6 p.m. (ET). The Cougars lead the all-time series 2-1.
Saturday’s doubleheader begins with a 1 p.m. (ET) game against East Tennessee State, 8-6. The Cougars trail the all-time record 1-5. East Tennessee State will proved to be a tough competitor, winning eight of its last 10 games.
The Showcase will close with a 4 p.m. (ET) matchup against Florida Gulf Coast, 25-4. The meeting between the two will be the first. Florida Gulf Coast will also be a competitive opponent as it is on a 17-game winning streak.
The team heads into the event after a 4-1 showing at the Bayer Cropscience Classic. BYU earned the honor of Tournament Champions, while Jessica Purcell was deemed Tournament MVP and Paige Affleck was named to the All-Tournament team.
Purcell was also honored as MWC Player of the Week after batting .526 with 9 RBI over the tournament.
