Cougars Begin the Season with the Long Ball

ST. GEORGE -- The BYU Women’s softball team cruised to its first two wins of the season with an exploding offensive effort and a strong showing from the circle, defeating Southern Utah, 8-1, and Loyola Marymount, 10-0, at the Red Desert Classic Thursday.

Sophomore catcher Jessica Purcell led the team going 3-for-5 with 9 RBI and 2 homers, while sophomore pitcher Paige Affleck tossed 5 shutout innings with 7 strike outs.

“I’m very pleased with the way the team finished today,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “They played like the team I expected them to be against a very good Loyola Marymount team.”

Against Southern Utah, the Cougars got off to a slow start before a grand slam from Purcell put BYU up 6-0in the top of the fifth. The Thunderbirds managed to score one run in the fifth with a solo homer but the Cougars answered back with two runs in the seventh.

The Cougars carried their offensive momentum over to Loyola Marymount when a double from senior shortstop Andrea Ramirez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Cougars took a 5-0 lead after the fifth inning when a three-run bomb from Purcell cleared the fence and junior Amanda Vance brought in another run.

In the bottom of the fifth inning BYU was one run shy of enacting the eight-run rule when senior right fielder Stephanie Hopkins blasted a three-run homer to end the game.

The Cougars continue play at the Red Desert Classic when they face Northern Colorado at 10:30 a.m. and No. 15 Washington at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
