SALT LAKE -- Despite falling behind early in the game, the BYU women's softball team (38-16, 11-4) rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning off of two home runs to defeat Utah (26-22, 9-6) on Ute Field. The BYU softball team now leads Utah two-games-to-one in the Deseret First Duel rivlary series.

"I'm proud of our girls for not giving up when we put ourselves in deficit situation," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It has been the hallmark of our team during this conference season."

Daniela Snow went 3-for-4, including the game-winning homer, while Krisitin Delahoussaye added to the offensive effort with a solo shot.

The Cougars took an aggressive opportunity to score early in the first inning when Dani Snow singled to the centerfielder with Amanda Vance at second. Vance safely reached third and was thrown out at home by Utah centerfielder Diana Phillips on a controversial call.

In the second inning Utah allowed three runners on with one hit batter and two walks. Yet the Cougars were unable to capitalize off of the three baserunners when Delahoussaye hit a ground ball to third base to end the inning.

The Cougars continued to play aggressively in the fourth inning. A walk allowed Angeline Quiocho on base and a bunt single put runners on first and second. Caschjen Davis laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners but reached on a throwing error that allowed Quiocho to score the first run of the game.

After three perfect innings, Gwyn-Trice allowed two runs to score off of four hits before Paige Affleck game in to relieve the hurler in the middle of the fourth inning. Affleck closed the inning without allowing any more damage to the Cougars.

In the top of the sixth Snow led off with a single just shy of the leftfielder. Quiocho reached first base on a walk and Purcell ground out to the shortstop to put both the tying and go-ahead run in scoring position with one out.

Davis knocked a slow-moving ball into the middle of the infield, bringing in Snow to tie the game 1-1. Utah retired the next two batters to leave the game tied at two runs apiece.

After walking Utah's leadoff batter in the sixth inning, Affleck gave up a two-run homer to give the Utes a 4-2 lead to end the sixth.

Delahoussaye led off the top of the seventh inning with a long ball over the right-center fence to spark a Cougar scoring rally. Vance singled to bring Snow to the plate. The BYU slugger went deep with the ball, down the left field line, to put the Cougars up 5-4.

"I was expecting the pitch so I sat back and went for it," Snow said. "We were thinking every one this inning and Delahoussaye hit a home run, which was huge and gave us momentum."

Gwyn-Trice re-entered the game in the seventh inning to try to close the contest for BYU. She allowed a leadoff single to put the tying run on first. A ground out advance the runner to second and a wild pitch put the runner on third with two outs. A fly ball to right field ended the game to give the Cougars the 5-4 victory.

BYU leads Utah 31 to 27 points overall in the Deseret Fist Duel. The Cougars will meet the Utes on the diamond again on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Ute Field.
