BYU Makes Quick Work of Northern Colorado
PROVO -- Reminiscent of its previous meeting earlier this season, the BYU softball team made quick work of Northern Colorado, defeating the Bears 9-0 on Tuesday. With the win the Cougars improve to 37-16 on the season while the Bears fall to 13-35.
Pitcher Paige Affleck led BYU with seven strike outs in her 10th win on the season, while the pitching staff combined for the one-hit shutout.
"Our pitching was very dominant; only giving up one hit in five innings," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "It's going to have to stay dominant in order for us to win the conference."
After a scoreless first inning, Emi Snow-Willing opened things up for the Cougars in the bottom of the second, as her hit up the left side brought Jessica Purcell home for the first run of the day. A single by Stephanie Hopkins and walk by Kristin Delahoussaye set Willing up on third base. The senior scored on a sacrifice fly by Monica Gonzales, putting BYU up 2-0.
The Cougars quickly earned three more runs after an error on Daniela Snow's hit to leftfield. Angelina Quiocho's hit up the middle brought Snow home as BYU ended the second inning up 6-0.
In the third inning the Cougars continued to dominate, holding Northern Colorado scoreless. At the bottom of the third, an error at third base set up another run for Willing. With the bases loaded, Amanda Vance walked, securing a run for Hopkins. Delahoussaye capitalized on Brittany Tokunaga's hit to right field, giving BYU a 9-0 advantage.
Up next, BYU heads to Salt Lake City to take on in-state rival Utah on Friday and Saturday. The meeting will mark the second between the two schools this season and will be part of the Deseret First Duel, in which BYU currently leads 29.5 points to Utah's 27.
"We're excited to play Utah," said Eakin. "If we play our game we should be hard to beat."
