Strong Pitching Dominates Doubleheader

PROVO -- The second doubleheader game in two days proved to be a success for the BYU softball team as the Cougars (24-13, 3-1) beat Colorado State (20-14, 1-3) in a sweep (9-3, 6-1) Friday night at Gail Miller Field.

Kristen Delahoussaye went 4-for-6 on the evening, while Emi Snow-Willing and Caschjen Davis both claimed three RBI in a single game alone. The Cougars had a total of 23 hits on the night.

"It feels good to win, especially since we are a little banged up right now," said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. "The girls really battled through, and it is nice to get both wins."

In the first game, BYU got on an early roll early when Davis hit an RBI double, allowing Delahoussaye to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Pitcher Christina Gwyn-Trice kept the Cougars' momentum defensively in the top of the second inning, as she struck out three batters swinging. BYU scored again in the second, when Monica Gonzales bunted and advanced to second off a throwing error, allowing Purcell to score.

Gwyn-Trice remained having only allowed 11 balls out of 51 pitches, by the end of the third inning.

The Cougars stepped up offensively in the fourth inning, getting three runs off of three hits and one error. Delahoussaye smacked a RBI double into deep right field, allowing shortstop Jessica Purcell, who hit a single of her own, to score. Amanda Vance then hit a RBI triple to send Delahoussaye home.

With a 5-0 lead and two outs in the top of the fifth, Gwyn-Trice gave up her first walk of the night. The following batter doubled, claiming the Rams' first hit of the game. The Cougars remained strong in the bottom of the fifth. Snow-Willing hit a RBI double to center, allowing Nix to score. BYU led CSU 6-2 at the end of the fifth.

With two runners in scoring position, Davis hit an off-the-wall double to right field, making it an 8-2 game. It was the second double of the night for the freshman. By the end of the inning, Davis made her way home off a sacrifice single by Angeline Quiocho. The Cougars finished the game with a 9-3 lead over the Rams.

"We hit the ball well in the first game and then capitalized on their mistakes," Eakin said. "Overall we played a complete game."

Much like the first game, the Cougars got off to an early lead against the Rams when Snow-Willing hit a three-run triple in the first inning. Purcell went on to send Snow-Willing home with a line-drive single. BYU led CSU 4-0 at the end of the first.

"There were some key hits in the first inning which really set the tone," Eakin said. "It allowed Paige [Affleck] to relax and pitch well."

Pitcher Paige Affleck maintained in control of the game. She held the Rams to a scoreless five innings, only allowing one hit in the third.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars scored two runs off a throwing error by the Rams, making it a 6-0 game.

At the top of the seventh inning BYU gave up its first run of the game when CSU hit a solo home run. The Cougars finished the game 6-1. This marks Affleck's fifth complete game.

The Cougars will continue home play when they face Southern Utah in a doubleheader. The games start at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Miller Park.
