Shuting Out Utah Valley
PROVO -- It's no April Fools' Day joke. In a impromptu women's softball game BYU shut out Utah Valley, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon in Orem.
The decision to play the game gave the two teams an opportunity to make up for weather related cancellations earlier in the season, and expected cancellations in the future.
Freshman Jessica Purcell led the Cougars, with back-to-back home runs and batted in six of BYU's seven runs. She led the team, going 2-for-3 on the day.
The game was tied at a deadlock until the third inning when Purcell began her offensive explosion with a sacrifice fly to bring Caschjen Davis from third. The score remained at 1-0 until the fifth inning when Purcell hit a two-run bomb over the right field fence to bring the score to 3-0.
In the seventh inning, Purcell launched a ball over the wall with two runners on base, totaling six RBI's on the day. Emi Snow-Willing brought in the final run with a single that brought in pinch runner Whitney Nix.
The BYU pitching staff gave up a combine two hits on the day. Christie Zinanti started the game and threw two innings, and recorded four strike outs before Paige Affleck relieved her.
Affleck went two innings without giving up a hit and recorded the win. Christina Gwyn-Trice recorded her first save of the season when she threw the last three innings of the game. She retired three straight batters before giving up a double, but quickly recovered and retired the last six batters of the game without allowing anyone on.
The Cougars open their conference schedule on Thursday when they host a doubleheader against New Mexico, beginning at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on CBS College Sports.
