KNOXVILLE -- The BYU women's softball team fell to No. 5 Tennessee, 8-2, during the opening game of the 2008 Tennessee Classic on Thursday. The loss leaves the Cougars at 7-4.

BYU managed to six hits against the Lady Volunteers, who also had six hits, but the Cougars were unable to capitalize on scoring situations.

"Tennessee is a good team," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We beat ourselves tonight. We gave up 10 walks and had four fielding mistakes, and you can't do that and expect to win."

Sophomore Angeline Quiocho extended her hitting streak to 11 games with her solo home run. She now totals eight home runs on the season, while the Cougars have 16 home runs and are on an eight-game home run streak.

With the defeat, Christina Gwyn Trice, 2-1, received her first loss of the season. She gave up six hits and three earned runs in the 5.2 innings she threw.

In the first inning Tennessee took the lead when one run scored on a double to center field. BYU struggled to answer back in the second inning when three straight batters were retired.

The Cougars' bats came alive during the third inning when they recorded two hits, including a single up the middle from Kristin Delahoussaye that scored BYU's first run.

Quiocho's homer to left center in the fourth inning gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead, which was their only lead of the game.

Tennessee tied the game, 2-2 quickly with a solo shot down the right field line by the lead-off batter.

In the fifth inning, Tennessee took the lead by scoring four runs on two walks, two hits and one error.

With the 6-2 deficit, BYU loaded the bases with an error and two singles. Tennessee pulled Ashton Ward from the circle and put in Megan Rhodes who ended the inning and the Cougars scoring opportunity.

In the sixth inning, Paige Affleck relieved Gwyn Trice. Four walks allowed a run to score, before Gwyn Trice came back to finish the inning. One more run scored off of a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-2.

BYU came up to bat in the top of the seventh inning but was unable to get on base, leaving the score at 8-2.

The Cougars play again on Friday at 10 a.m. against Louisiana Monroe and at 12:15 p.m. against Virginia. Live stats are available at www.byucougars.com.
