Pitchers Combine for No-Hitter Against UVSC

PROVO -- Juniors Dani Urincho-Snow and Christina Gwyn and freshman Christie Zinanti all combined to throw a no-hitter against UVSC (14-22), as BYU (21-16, 2-2) beat the Wolverines 8-0 Tuesday at Gail Miller Field.

"We were strong in every area today, especially in our pitching," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "All three played well especially heading into this weekend."

Jennifer Whiteley hit her second triple of the year in the first inning, which sent Cortney Nix-Clark home from first base. Emi Snow would lay down a sacrifice bunt later in the inning to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. After a Urincho-Snow single, Andi Ramirez recorded the second triple of the inning giving BYU a 3-0 advantage after one. The Cougars went ahead 4-0 in the second on a Nix-Clark single that scored Angeline Quiocho.

On the defensive side of the ball, BYU provided the fans with a couple web gems. In the top of the third UVSC senior Cari Hamilton sent a fly ball into shallow left field. Whiteley sprinted to the ball and made a diving catch to keep the Wolverines from getting what would have been their first hit of the game. In the same inning, UVSC sophomore Heidi Boyer smacked a chopper that took a high bounce. Norton extended as far as she could reach to keep the ball infield and record the force-out at third.

Snow kept the bats warm with a lead-off double down the left field line in the third inning. The very next batter, Urincho-Snow, took one deep over the center field wall putting BYU ahead 6-0. After Tracee Hoch and Monica Gonzales got themselves in scoring position, Nix-Clark hit a double that bounced off the left field wall. The 8-0 score held through the fifth inning where the game was called due to NCAA softball's mercy rule. Urincho-Snow finished with five strikeouts while grabbing her fourth win of the season.

"Dani is very capable both at the plate and on the mound," Eakin said. "She took it to both ends of the game today."

BYU heads north on the I-15 to take on University of Utah this weekend. The teams meet at 4 p.m. (MST) on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
