Nix-Clark, Quiocho Power BYU to Victories

FRESNO -- The BYU softball team (11-7) improved to 2-1 at the Bulldog Classic with a pair of wins against Toledo (2-10) and Purdue (6-15). The Cougars defeated the Rockets by a score of 4-0 and beat the Boilermakers 5-3 in Friday's double-header.
Jennifer Whiteley got the Cougars off to a quick start in the top of the first by reaching on a one-out single and then stealing second base. Whiteley scored when Rockets third baseman Mica Sanchez made a throwing error on a Monica Gonzales bunt. Later, in the second inning with runners in scoring position, Cortney Nix-Clark doubled to right center to give BYU a 3-0 lead. The next batter, Whiteley, hit an RBI single for the 4-0 advantage heading into the third.
BYU tacked on the final run in the seventh inning where Andi Ramirez smacked a lead-off double to right center. Nix-Clark stepped up to the plate next and belted a single to left field, scoring pinch runner Stephanie Platt. Nix-Clark finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Christina Gwyn improved to 6-4 with the complete game shutout victory. Gwyn allowed just two hits and had six strikeouts.
Nix-Clark's bat was still hot against Purdue, as the senior from Show Low, Ariz., swatted a lead-off triple to start the game. Boilermakers' pitcher Ashley DiDomenico threw a wild pitch on the next play, which allowed Nix-Clark to take home and give the Cougars the early 1-0 advantage.
Angeline Quiocho began the second inning with an extra base hit of her own. Quiocho's double was followed by three consecutive singles from Dani Urincho, Tracee Hoch and Platt. However, the 2-0 lead didn't hold up for very long. With two on and one out in the top of the third, Purdue sophomore Candace Curtis tripled to right field. A wild pitch from Urincho to the next batter allowed Curtis to score the go-ahead run.
The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Quiocho sent a two-run home run to right center. Quiocho led off the sixth inning with another double. After a Urincho sacrifice fly sent Quiocho to third base, Hoch drove her in for the 5-3 win. Quiocho, who scored three runs on 3-for-3 hitting with two RBI against Purdue, is now tied with Nix-Clark with a team-leading four home runs on the season.
The Bulldog Classic resumes Saturday with another double-header for BYU. The Cougars face Purdue once again at 9 a.m. (PST) and Penn State at 2 p.m. Both games are available via Live Stats.
