Cougars Leave Vegas With Split
PROVO -- BYU defeated UNLV 6-5 in game one of a double-header but was on the short end of the 6-5 score in game two Saturday in Las Vegas.
Summer Tobias won her twelfth game of the year giving up five runs (two earned) with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Lauren Watson-Perry continued to hit the ball well, going 3-for-4 with four RBI including a home run in her first at-bat of the game.
The Rebels fought their way back with BYU leading 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh when UNLV's first batter hit a solo home run to close the gap. However, Tobias and the Cougar defense shut down the Rebels to secure the win.
Game two started out well for the Cougars leading 1-0 after two innings, but in the third and fourth innings, UNLV got on a roll, scoring two and three runs respectively. With BYU down 3-6 in the seventh inning and looking bleak, the tide turned back to the Cougars. After Watson-Perry and Krystle Chamberlain reached base safely, Neta Le'I doubled to right field, hitting in both Watson-Perry and Chamberlain, cutting the UNLV lead to one with two outs and Ashlyn Russell, the potential winning run, at the plate. UNLV changed pitchers, obviously wary of the Russell's ability, especially in the long ball (13 home runs this season). Unfortunately for Russell and the Cougars, she grounded out to third and BYU lost their first conference game of the season.
BYU goes to 25-9, 5-1 MWC on the season. The Cougars play UVSC Tuesday April 12 at 3 p.m. at the new Parkway Crossing Stadium in Orem, Utah
