Cougars Drop Two in a Row

PROVO -- The Cougars dropped two in a row for the first time all season losing to 16th ranked Oregon State 1-5 and 3-4 in double-header action Friday in Corvallis, Ore.

BYU managed just one run on three hits in against the Beavers game one with their only run coming off a seventh inning home run by Ashlyn Russell. It was Russell's eleventh home run of the season. Defensively the Cougars looked good with undefeated Daniella Urincho on the mound to start the game, but Urincho struggled in the third inning giving up all five Oregon St. runs. Brooke Boyce came in to relieve Urincho, but the damage was done giving Urincho her first loss of the season.

BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said he was pleased with the way his team came to play.

"We showed up today mentally, I was pleased with our play all around," Eakin said. "We played toe to toe with the 16th ranked team in the country."

Game two looked promising with BYU taking a 3-2 advantage after a Paige Paramore solo home run to lead off the fourth inning. However, it was not to be as Oregon St. added two runs in the fifth taking 4-3 lead.

With the darkening Oregon skies, BYU unfortunately was allowed one more at-bat before the game was called after five and a half innings due to darkness. Oregon St. is now on a 13-game winning streak, the longest in school history.

"It was unfortunate that the game was called," Eakin said. "Who knows what could have happened."

BYU (17-6) is scheduled to play a double-header Saturday March 26 against the University of Oregon (18-9) in Eugene, Ore.
