Bittersweet Day for the Cougars
PROVO -- BYU softball finished the day shutting out Kansas 3-0 in the early game, but came up just short losing to No. 3 Texas 0-1 Friday at the Palm Springs Classic Palm Springs, Calif.
In the early game against Kansas, Cougar pitcher Brooke Boyce really brought it pitching a full-game shutout while facing 22 batters.
"Brooke pitched a masterful game," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "You couldn't ask for more from her, she really gutted it out for the team."
Offensively, BYU had six hits including two big hits by junior Paige Paramore that drove in two critical runs. Senior Lauren Watson-Perry went 1-for-4 and sophomore Jodi Norton went 2-for-3 on the game.
Against Texas, the game was scoreless for the first two innings, but in the top of the third inning a controversial call when a Texas player attemped to steal second base, allowed for the only run to score later in the inning.
Facing one of the top pitchers in the country in Texas' Meagan Denny, the Cougars struggled at the plate unable to get a hit. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars did manage to get a runner in scoring position at third base. Unfortunately, they weren't able to push it across and BYU just ran out of time.
Junior Summer Tobias pitched a great game for the Cougars striking out four batters and only one walk in her first loss of the season.
Eakin said he looks at this game as a learning experience.
"We really battled out there against a great pitcher, one like this team had never faced before," Eakin said. "We will learn from this game knowing we competed head-to-head with one of the best in the country."
BYU now goes to 9-1 on the season with two games on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Cougars face Long Island University at 1:00 p.m. and Oklahoma State at 8:00 p.m.
