Dodds sets new BYU single-game record with 3 stolen bases in a game

PROVO -- The BYU softball team swept conference opponent New Mexico 7-4, 4-0 in a doubleheader at Gail Miller Field on Friday.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 30-15, 7-6 MWC, while the Lobos fall to 29-28, 3-10 MWC.

"It was a good all around team effort," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said.

In game one, junior Debbie Dodds' single up the middle brought in senior Kate Walker for the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

Sophomore Ianeta Le'i extended the BYU lead to two runs by hitting her seventh home run of the season over the right field scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning.

The Lobos responded with a three-run top of the fifth inning to snatch a 3-2 lead over the Cougars.

But BYU would answer with a big five-run inning highlighted by a three-run home run down the left field line from shortstop Jodi Norton to make seven on the year.

New Mexico put another run on the board in the top of the sixth inning but BYU ran away with the 7-4 victory.

Niki Andersen (15-6) got the win on the mound with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of play. Ariel Capra came in to close the final 1.1 innings of the game. New Mexico's Iraina Ogas (9-7) got the loss.

In the second match up against the Lobos, Ashlyn Russell led BYU to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to left field. With the homer, Russell now posts a team-high 10 home runs on the season.

The Cougars were able to add on to their lead by adding three more runs in the game to grab a 4-0 shutout-victory over New Mexico.

A new BYU single-game record for most stolen bases in a game was set by Dodds as she had an impressive three stolen bases in game two. She stole two bases in the bottom of the fourth inning and one in the bottom of the sixth.

"Debbie has really elevated her game the last month," Eakin said. "I'm happy for her to get that record."

Brooke Boyce (12-6) pitched a three-hitter and recorded seven strikeouts in a complete seven innings on the mound. Boyce got the win on the mound, while Amy Dumas (8-14) received the loss.

"Brooke was in control and hit the spots," BYU pitching coach Vaughn Alvey said. "She set things up, and when she does that she's really tough."

BYU will host Colorado State on Saturday at Gail Miller Field starting at 2 p.m. The doubleheader will be the final home games of the season.
