Softball Drops Two at Colorado State
FORT COLLINS -- Colorado State swept BYU in a double header 4-2, 2-0 in two close games Thursday afternoon at Ram Field in Fort Collins, Colo.
In the first game, Colorado State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ricki Walker laced a single to left center, knocking in Stephanie Roberts.
Paige Paramore got BYU started in the fourth inning with a bunt single. Lindsey Gerhauser was then inserted into the game to pinch run for Paramore.
Gerhauser advanced to second on a single by Lauren Watson. With runners on first and second and one out, Kate Walker stepped to the plate and blasted a double to right field, scoring both Gerhauser and Watson to give BYU a 2-1 lead.
BYU held onto the lead until the fifth inning, when the Rams scored on an R.B.I single by Jennifer Gardner. CSU took the lead the following inning when Kerry Farrell and Brittany Huerta hit back-to-back homeruns. Colorado State retired the Cougars in order in the seventh to earn the 4-2 victory.
Niki Anderson pitched six innings in the loss giving up four earned runs, while striking out three and walking one.
The second game was a pitchers duel between the Rams' Genevieve Kelly and the Cougars' Brooke Boyce with Kelly scattering just two hits over seven innings to earn the 2-0 shut out victory. Boyce gave up two runs off of five hits with one strike out and two walks in the loss.
Colorado State got on the board in the first inning on an R.B.I. single by Rachelle Padeway. Boyce started out the second inning by forcing Farrell to pop out to second base and Huerta to line out to Jodi Norton at short before giving up the run.
The Rams added another run in the sixth inning to account for the final score. With the losses BYU falls to 23-14, 3-5 in MWC play, while Colorado State improves to 28-11, 4-2 in conference.
