BYU Splits UNLV Conference Opener, L 6-3, W 5-3

PROVO -- BYU battled through rain delays and an injury during the conference opener against UNLV to split two games L 6-3, W 5-3 on Thursday at Gail Miller Field.
With the split, the Cougars post 19-10, 1-1 overall records, while the Rebels are 18-22, 1-1.
An unfortunate final play in the top of the first inning put sophomore pitcher Brooke Boyce out the remainder of the game. Boyce left the game after taking a line drive to the face, and her return is questionable at this time.
"Brooke is such a pivotal part of the team," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It was pretty devastating to lose her in the first inning, especially this early in conference. But if anybody can come back, it will be Brooke. I was proud of the team for battling through it."
Cougar pitcher Ariel Capra replaced Boyce in the top of the second inning.
The offense started for BYU as Ashlyn Russell doubled to get BYU's first hit of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Jodi Norton followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Russell to third. Krystle Chamberlain would score Lindsey Gerhauser (who pinch ran for Rusesell) for the first BYU run of the game.
The Cougars would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Belinda Osborn led off the inning with a triple and was brought home by Paige Paramore's sacrifice fly to put BYU up by two runs.
UNLV would answer with a big four-run inning (off five hits) in the top of the fifth inning to take the 4-2 go ahead.
Russell's solo home run, her sixth of the season, in the bottom of the fifth inning brought the Cougars back within a run at 4-3.
But the Rebels gathered a two-run top of the sixth inning to put the score at 6-3 for the remainder of the seven innings.
Junior Ariel Capra pitched 4.1 innings for BYU until Niki Andersen relieved her for the final 1.2 innings. Capra (3-2) got the loss on the mound, while UNLV pitcher Jacqueline Kerrigan (15-14) got the win.
In game two, the Cougars came out strong by recording a season game-high four doubles in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run.
Krystle Chamberlain led off the inning with a double and Belinda Osborn hit a sac bunt to advance Chamberlain to third. Russell was walked and then Lauren Watson came through with a huge three-run homer to clear the bases and give BYU a 3-0 lead. Ianeta Le`i, Kate Walker and Jodi Norton had back-to-back-to-back doubles, which scored two runs and gave BYU a 5-0 advantage.
After the bottom of the second inning, rain delayed the game again and tarps were put over the field.
After the break, UNLV added its first run of the game in the top of the fourth off a single from Wendy Godwin to put the score at 5-1.
The Rebels would add two more runs on the board, one in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to put the final score at 5-3.
Andersen pitched a complete seven innings on the mound for BYU. Andersen (10-3) picked up the win, while UNLV pitcher Kacey Ellis (2-6) got the loss.
The Cougars will not have much time to rest up as they face San Diego State, last year's regular-season champs, on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Game one of the doubleheader will be televised on BYU TV. Play-by-play will be provided Jay Monsen and Garry Sheide will be the color analyst.
