Cougars Continue the Streak Defeating UC Riverside 7-0, Loyola Marymount 7-6

Norton, Le`i lift BYU in the sixth inning of game two, each with huge three-run homers

SANTA BARBARA -- It was an exciting day for the BYU softball team as it shutout UC Riverside 7-0 and defeated Loyola Marymount 7-6 on Friday at the Softball by the Beach Invitational.

With the two wins, the Cougars improve to 5-3 on the season and keep a five game winning streak alive.

The Cougars came out strong against the Highlanders to score seven runs and hold UCR scoreless. This marks the first shutout of the season for BYU.

BYU was explosive on the offensive end registering 11 hits. Paige Paramore, Krystle Chamberlain, Jennifer Whiteley and Lauren Watson all helped contribute to the stellar offensive play.

Paramore went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and also picked up her second home run of the season. Chamberlain went 2-for-4 with Whitley and Watson each posting 2-for-3 performances.

BYU junior Niki Andersen pitched a solid game to capture her second win on the mound. Andersen struck out eight batters and only allowed three hits in the game.

The Cougars played solid defense to mark their third straight game with no errors.

In the second matchup, BYU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third off of a hit from Whiteley who knocked in Chamberlain.

LMU came back to snatch a 6-1 lead after a huge third inning to gain momentum of the game. But, what the Lions didn't know was that the Cougars were about to make a massive sixth inning comeback.

Junior Milli Jones got the explosive sixth inning started with a single to start the rally, followed by a single from senior Kate Walker. Freshman Jodi Norton stepped up to hit a big three-run home run, the first homer of her career, bringing the game within two runs.

With one out, Chamberlain singled, followed by an infield single from Whiteley to put two runners on base. Slugger Ianeta Le`i lifted the team with her exciting three-run homer to take the 7-6 lead. The homer was her first of the season.

BYU held LMU in the bottom of the sixth. Boyce secured the game striking out two-of-three Lion batters. The game was called at dusk after the bottom of the sixth inning was completed.

Junior Ariel Capra (1-1) started on the mound for BYU and pitched two innings. Andersen replaced Capra until the final inning when Boyce came in to close. Andersen (3-1) got the win, and Boyce (1-1) received the save.

Other hitting highlights for game two were Walker's perfect 2-for-2 display and Ashlyn Russell's 2-for-3 showing.

"LMU was an extremely great hitting team," Eakin said. "It was a good day offensively and a solid day defensively. We battled with an explosive team and got a nice win out of it."

The Cougars will play two final games Saturday against Florida International at 5:30 p.m. MT and University of Central Florida at 8 p.m. MT to conclude the five-game Santa Barbara tournament.
