BYU Defeats St. Mary's 2-1
HONOLULU -- The BYU softball team defeated St. Mary's 2-1 in the last game of the Hawai`i Paradise Classic tournament. The Cougars improved to 2-3, while the Gaels dropped to 1-4.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Cougars put the first two runs on the board.
Sophomore Ashlyn Russell started the hitting for BYU with a single through the left side, followed by a double to right center from fellow Hawaiian teammate Ianeta Le`i. Senior Kate Walker brought home Russell off a single to right field (1-0). Freshman Jodi Norton grounded out to shortstop, but scored Le`i to help the Cougars take a 2-0 lead.
Russell and Le`i were each 2-for-3 from the plate, and both scored a run apiece in the game.
St. Mary's was held to only one run, which came in the top of the sixth inning (2-1).
Cougar pitcher Niki Andersen (1-1) earned her first win of the season and the Gaels pitcher Jennifer Eaton (1-3) got the loss. In seven innings on the mound, Andersen struck out eight of the 26 batters she faced.
The Hawai`i tournament was a great season-opening tournament for the Cougars to play against quality competition. The three teams BYU lost to at the tournament were ranked in one of the two college softball polls.
Oregon State of the Pac-10 was ranked No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Softball Preseason Top 25 Collegiate Poll and received 23 votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll. Tennessee also made the top 25 polls coming in at No. 25 in the ESPN/USA poll and receiving 39 votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll. Hawai`i received four votes in the USA Today/ NFCA poll after winning the WAC Championship last season.
This was also the Cougars' first tournament playing outdoors since the fall season. The team has been playing indoors in BYU's new Indoor Practice Facility.
"We came out a little lethargic," BYU coach Mindy Hanson said. "We made good adjustments and came out better at the end of the tournament."
BYU will prepare for its next tournament, the Softball by the Beach Invitational, in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Feb 19-21.
