Rams Win Despite Two Cougar Home Runs

SAN DIEGO -- No. 3 seed BYU (34-16) lost to No. 2 seed Colorado State 4-3 in the fourth game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in San Diego, Thursday.

BYU now will play in-state rival Utah, who lost to No. 5 seed New Mexico 5-0 in the second game of the tournament, Friday at 12:30 MDT. The Cougars split the season series with Utah 2-2, with a split at both home fields.

The Rams got on the board first with an RBI single from shortstop Brittany Burtner with the bases loaded and two outs to score Jennifer Mahoney.

BYU responded in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run over the left field fence to score MWC Co-Player of the Year Oli Keohohou, who was intentionally walked to start the inning. The home runs was Cadiente's ninth of the season and her third and fourth RBI of the day.

All-MWC sophomore catcher Lauren Watson hit a solo home to right field with two outs in the fifth inning, the 10th of the season, to build the lead to 3-1.

Colorado State responded well in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs with two outs. All-MWC Ricki Walker doubled to score MWC Co-Player of the Year Steph Roberts. Melanie Laffod hit a game-winning two-run home run to right center to score Allisa Thompson, who pinch ran for Walker.

Freshman Brooke Boyce (11-5) picked up the loss for the Cougars through five innings on the mound. Colorado State's Megan Masser picked up the win allowing five hits through seven innings while strking out six Cougar batters.
