First-Place Aztecs Too Much for Cougars
SAN DIEGO -- The BYU women's softball team (27-11, 5-4) lost to first-place San Diego State (31-14, 7-0) 5-2 in a single-game due to rain delays, Thursday. BYU will play a doubleheader at UNLV on Saturday.
BYU took a quick 1-0 in the first inning as junior Oli Keohohou singled to center field. She was advanced to second on a sac bunt by junior Kate Walker and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Keohohou scored as sophomore Lauren Watson grounded out to second base.
The Aztecs responded with two runs in the bottom of the first as Jacque Vaca singled to score teammates Erin Mahoney and Janna Kovensky. Mahoney then singled in the second inning to score Jennifer Funk. Joann Figueroa scored off a sac fly from Vaca as the Aztecs built a 4-1 lead.
The Cougars reduced the deficit in the third inning as sophomore Milli Jones scored off a sac fly from Watson to bring the Cougars within two runs at 4-2.
San Diego State finished the scoring in the sixth inning as Funk homored over left field for a 5-3 final score.
Senior Cynthia Fallowfield (6-3) picked up the loss giving up four runs in the start. She was relieved by senior Mandy Flint who went 4 2/3 innings and only have up one run. MWC Pitcher of the Week Celena Valasquez (11-4) picked up the win in a complete game four-hitter for the Aztecs.
