New Mexico and Colorado State Headline MWC Road Trip
PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team (25-8, 3-1) will travel to New Mexico on Thursday and Colorado State on Saturday for two key conference doubleheaders this week. The Cougars have won 16 of their last 17 games and are coming off a 4-0 week.
BYU swept the Mountain West Conference awards this week as All-American Oli Keohohou and freshman Brooke Boyce were named player and pitcher of the week, respectively. Keohohou leads the conference in virtually every offensive category and is batting .449 with 14 home runs and 37 RBI. She also has a 12 game hitting streak along with 12 multiple RBI games. Boyce has an 8-1 record and picked up three wins in three appearances on the mound last week with a 2.14 ERA.
The New Mexico Lobos (16-26-1, 1-5) are led in hitting by freshman shortstop Ashley VanBoxmeer (.357), while freshman P/DP Iraine Ogas (.311) paces the team in RBI with 23. Former MWC Pitcher of the Week Amy Dumas (10-11, 1.66) leads the team in strikeouts with 143. The Lobos were swept by CSU last weekend. BYU defeated the Rams 3-2 at the New Mexico State tournament last month in a non-conference match and UNM leads the all-time series 8-7.
Colorado State is 3-3 in conference play after having won 13 straight before conference play. The Rams have a team ERA of 1.57, which currently ranks third all-time in CSU history. Steph Roberts leads the team with a .330 batting average and 10 doubles. Former MWC Player of the week Ricki Walker is just behind her with a .327 batting average and 20 RBI. BYU leads the all-time series 7-5 and the teams swept each other on the road last season including an exciting 16 inning thriller at Gail Miller Park that saw the Rams win 6-5.
BYU will remain on the road until the weekend of April 25-26 when they host New Mexico and Colorado State at home.
