Cougars Romp Aggies with Nine Home Runs
LOGAN -- It may be April Fool's day, but the score is no joke. The BYU women's softball team (23-8) hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first game for a 12-2 blowout in five innings at Utah State (5-22). In game two of the doubleheader, the first three Cougar batters hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for a 9-1 romp in six innings. The Cougars improve to 15-0 all-time against the Aggies and has now won 14 of their last 15 games.
On the day, the Cougars hit 30-58 for an amazing .517 average on the day. All-American Oli Keohohou hit 4-6 with three home runs bringing her season total to 13. Junior shortstop Kate Walker batted 3-7 with two home runs and last week's MWC Player of the Week Lauren Watson went 5-8 with two home runs, bring her season total to five and she has successfully hit in 12 of her last 13 games.
In the first game, the four consecutive home runs were hit by Keohohou, Walker, Watson, and senior Brooke Cadiente, Freshman Ianeta Lei added a three-run home run in the first to to make the grand total of five home runs in the the first game. BYU had 19 hits in 31 at bats.
Freshman Brooke Boyce (6-1) was credited the win in three innings. Senior Mandy Flint relieved her for the final two innings.
In game two of the doubleheader, Keohohou, Walker, and Watson hit the three consecutive home runs in the first three at bats in the top of the first inning. Keohohou added a two-run homer in the sixth. BYU scored nine runs on 11 hits in 27 at bats.
Sophomore Niki Andersen (6-3) picked up the win in four innings and was relieved for the final two innings by senior Cynthia Fallowfield.
"We hit the ball unbelievable well," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We also played great defense."
BYU will host two pivotal MWC doubleheaders with UNLV on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and league-leading San Diego State on Friday at 1 p.m. Both games will be at Gail Miller Field in Provo.
