Utes Snap Win Streak With Split

PROVO -- The BYU softball team split its Moutain West Conference opener at home against Utah 12-5, 7-2 at Gail Miller Park, Saturday. The Cougars are now 21-8, 1-1 and their school record win streak was snapped at 12 games. Utah is 11-17, 1-1 on the season.

In the opening game of Mountain West Conference play, BYU women's athletics honored BYU president Merrill J. Bateman as he threw out the opening pitch to start the conference season for the Cougars.

Senior Cynthia Fallowfield got herself into some early trouble in the top of the first inning. Utah freshman Jackie Wong singled to first and advanced to second on a balk. Junior Masie Ota walked and advanced to second off a Niki Hayhurst sac fly. With runners on second and third, junior Melissa Stahnke singled to score Wong and Ota. Junior Glennis Donnelly singled to advance Stahnke, who scored off a throwing error by the Cougar's shortstop as the Utes took a quick 3-0 lead.

In the third inning, BYU looked to tap into the Ute lead as Oli Keohohou singled up the middle. Junior Kate Walker then reached on an error and advanced to second. With runners on second and third, Utah senior pitcher Jen Pursell struck out sophomore Lauren Watson and Brooke Cadiente to end any chances for an early Cougar comeback.

Utah scored two more in the top of the fourth after two walks given up by Fallowfield put runners on first and second. Sophomore Niki Andersen came in relief but the Utes built a 5-0 lead after both runs were brought home.

The Cougars responded well in the bottom of the inning as freshman Ashlyn Russell doubled and junior Belinda Osborn drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Milli Jones singled to load the bases and Keohohou stepped up to the plate and hit a double down the right field line to score Russell and Osborn. Walker stepped up and hit a triple to score Keohohou and Jones. Watson then reached on a Ute error to score Walker and tie the score at 5-5 going into the fifth.

The Cougars scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth led by a grand-slam by MWC Player of the Week Lauren Watson, her second career grand slam. BYU also tacked on three runs off Ute errors to put the game out of reach at 12-5. Utah scored in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough as the damage had been done in the sixth.

"Pursell had been throwing me outside pitches all game and the hit was solid and I felt it would go over," Watson said of the grand slam.

Freshman Brooke Boyce (5-1) picked up the win as she relieve Andersen in the top of the sixth. Jen Pursell dropped to 6-9 on the season giving up 12 runs off 11 Cougar hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, BYU came out flat again as Utah scored two runs in the first inning to get a quick jump on scoreboard as Niki Hayhurst brought home Jackie Wong, who reached on a single. Hayhurst later score off a Cougar error.

The Utes tacked on one run in the third inning off a home run by Lindsey Wall. They scored again in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Wong drove in a run in the sixth. As the Utes took a commanding 7-0 lead. Utah pitcher Heather Bowlin pitched a one-hitter through five innings.

The Cougars avoided a shutout as freshman Ianeta Lei reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored off an error. Keohohou added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score Belinda Osborn but it wasn't enough as the game ended in a 7-2 Ute win, snapping the Cougar 12 game winning streak.

Senior Mandy Flint (6-1) picked up the loss in the start for the Cougars while Heather Bowlin (4-8) picked up the win in a three-hitter for Utah

"I'm happy with our comeback in the first game, but we have had an inability to start games well all season long," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Bowlin did a nive job of holding us off in the second game."

BYU travels to Logan to take on Utah State in a doubleheader on Tuesday. They continue MWC conference play at home next week with doubleheaders against UNLV on Thursday and San Diego State on Friday at Gail Miller Field.
