Ninth Keohohou Home Run Leads BYU to School Record Ninth Straight Win

LAS CRUCES -- All-American Oli Keohohou scored the Cougar's only two runs against Missouri-Kansas City in a tight 2-1 victory to extend the BYU women's softball team's (18-7) win streak to nine, breaking the school record of eight that was set in late March of 2001. BYU avenged the NCAA loss of the men's basketball team a day earlier to beat UConn 9-1 in the early game.

In the first at bat of the game against UMKC, Keohhohou hit a solo home run, her ninth of the season, to help the Cougars take a quick 1-0 lead. The Kangaroos tied it up a 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. BYU responded in the fifth inning with Keohohou reaching second base off an error. Sophomore Lauren Watson singled to advance Keohohou to third. Watson then proceeded to steal second and was thrown out but it was too late because Keohohou scored from third for a 2-1 lead and freshman Brooke Boyce came in a saved the Cougar win with two solid innings of relief.

Sophomore Niki Andersen (5-3) picked up the win in five innings on the mound.

Against UConn, he Cougars reeled off 12 hits for nine runs to end the game in six innings. The Huskies scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. BYU responded as Keohohou got things going in the bottom of first with a single. Junior Kate Walker sacrificed to advance Keohohou to second. Senior Brooke Cadiente singled to right field to score Keohohou as the Cougars tied the score at 1-1.

In the second inning, Ianeta Lei walked and was followed by a Belinda Osborn bunt that she out ran for a base hit. Lei advanced to third and scored on a bad throw by the Huskies, 2-1 BYU lead.

In the fourth inning, freshman Ashlyn Russell singled and junior Lindsey Gerhauser pinch ran for her. Gerhauser advanced to third off a single by Lei. Sophomore catcher Arron Layns hit a sacrifice fly to score Gerhauser. Walker then doubled and Lauren Watson hit a home run, her second of the season, to score both her and Walker and give the Cougars a 5-1 cushion.

In the sixth, Lei led off with a double and was brought home by a double by Belinda Osborn. Keohohou tripled scoring Osborn and was brought home by a Walker single. Walker advanced to second on a wild pitch and was scored by a Watson single, her third RBI of the game and the final run scored as the game by called by the eight-run rule.

Senior Mandy Flint (6-1) pitched five innings and picked up the win while striking out three. Boyce relieved Flint in the top of the sixth inning and gave up no runs.

Commenting on the recent Cougar surge, head coach Gordon Eakin said, "I still think we have a lot of room for improvement, but we are just finding ways to win. We got the job done (against UMKC) defensively and pitching wise. Boyce has been clutch for us out of the bullpen. We are not satisfied and are taking it one game at a time."

The Cougars will finish the weekend tomorrow against New Mexico in a non-conference game at 8 a.m. and will play Texas-San Antonio at noon. The Cougars will open conference play next Saturday against Utah at Gail MIller Field in a doubleheader starting at noon.
