Triples Lead to Sixth Straight Win

PROVO -- The Cougars hit three triples that led to a triple game sweep of Utah State with a 12-4 win in six innings at Miller Park Saturday afternoon. BYU improved to 13-0 against Utah State and has won six straight games.

Senior Brooke Cadiente remained hot as she went 2-2 with a double, two walks and two runs scored. Overall for the weekend Cadiente went a perfect 7-7 with nine RBI, six runs scored, two triples, two doubles, and a home run.

"I had a lot of fun this weekend with my parents in town to see me play," Cadiente said of her blazing performance.

The Aggies scored first taking a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning off a double by Amanda Carlson that scored Marcie Neff, who reached on a walk.

The Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning starting with a walk by Cadiente, a single by freshman Ashlyn Russell, and a single by Ianeta Lei to load the bases. Junior Belinda Osborn reached first on a fielder's choice as Cadiente was tagged out at home.

Two costly errors by the Aggies allowed Russell, Lei and Osborn to score and give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.

The Aggies responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third as sophomore pitcher Niki Andersen found herself in trouble by committing an error and a wild pitch that scored Utah State's Neff for her second run of the game. A single by Sarah Fleming tied the score at 3-3 with no outs.

Freshman Brooke Boyce came in relief for Andersen and got the Cougars out of the inning with only one Aggie run scored off an errant throw to home.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning, Cadiente got things going with a double followed by a single by Russell. Lei drew a walk and Osborn hit a sac fly to left field to score Cadiente. Debbie Dodds then hit a clutch single to left field to score Russell and Barnes, who pinch ran for Lei. Sophomore Milli Jones then nailed the first triple of her career over the rightfielder's head to score Dodds. Jones scored off a single from Keohohou as the Cougars had five hits and five runs in the inning to take a commanding 8-4 lead.

"We weren't happy with our sloppy play in the middle innings, but we came back strong," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It's nice to have Boyce in the bullpen and be able to count on her to contribute to the team's success."

BYU scored two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a single by Lei that scored Watson, who reached on a walk. Cadiente scored off a wild pitch to take a 10-4 lead.

Oli Keohohou hit a home run in the fifth inning, a solo shot over center field and her seventh of the season. Lei singled in the sixth and scored off a triple by Osborn that ended the game in a 12-4 win. Lei finished the game 3-3 with one RBI and three runs scored.

The Cougars travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to play in their final non-conference tournament next weekend. BYU will then play UVSC in a home exhibition on March 25th before starting conference play against Utah on March 29 in a doubleheader at noon.
