Two Keohohou Home Runs Power Lead Cougs to Three Straight
FRESNO -- Powered by two home runs from All-American Oli Keohohou, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning, the BYU softball team (12-7) avenged a Wednesday lost to host Fresno State with 6-4 win. BYU defeated St. John's 4-1 in the early game and have won three straight heading into their home-opener next Friday against Utah State at Miller Park.
Playing in front of a sold-out stadium of over 2,000, BYU managed to jump out to an early lead in the first inning off a two-run blast that by Keohohou, her fifth of the season that scored sophomore Lauren Watson who reached on a single.
In the fourth inning, Fresno scored off a solo home run to bring the Bulldogs within one at 2-1. BYU responded with two runs of their own. Keohohou walked and senior Brooke Cadiente doubled to put runners on second and third base. Freshman Ianeta Lei scored Kehohou on a fielder's choice. The Cougars successfully pulled off a suicide squeeze using Kate Walker that scored Cadiente and give them a 4-1 lead.
The Bulldogs were relentless tied the game up with a hit in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs that scored three runs in the top of the sixth.
"With the hit, the place was rockin," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said.
The Cougars countere and brought in senior Mandy Flint to relieve freshman Brooke Boyce. Flint got the Bulldogs to pop it up and got BYU out of a jam. Unable to score in the didn't score in the bottom of the sixth.
With the scored tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh and facing two outs, freshman Ashlyn Russell singled to right center. Keohohou stepped up to the plate and swung at a 1-1 pitch and hit a mammoth shot to left field to win the game.
"The shot was a rocket, the crowd was noisy and screaming at us and after that hit you could hear a pin drop except for our bench," Eakin said. "We battled through some tough times and managed to win three straight. We beat a Fresno State team that is better than their record in front a roucous home field."
The early game against St John's was a pitchers duel with senior Cynthia Fallowfield getting the win with a complete game one-hitter, her first of the season.
BYU scored in the third inning starting with a walk by sophomore Arron Layns. Sophomore Katy Barnes pinch ran for Layns. Walker singled to put runners on first and second base. Russell singled to scored Barnes and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning.
St. Johns tied the game in the sixth inning at one run apiece. BYU responded with three runs as Walker reached on error and was replaced by Lindsey Gerhauser. Russell hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Gerhauser to second. Keohohou hit an RBI triple to score Gerhauser and give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. The triple was the first for Keohohou in over a year.
Cadiente and Lei walked to load the bases. Senior Cynthia Fallowfield walked to score Keohohou and Layns was hit by a pitch to score Cadiente and give the Cougars a 4-1 final score.
BYU will open home play this Friday and Saturday against Utah State at Gail Miller park. Play will begin at 1 p.m. on both days. BYU has never lost to Utah State in their three year history.
