Cougs Split on Opening Day at SUU Tourney

ST. GEORGE -- The BYU women's softball team (1-1) split its season-opening day with a 5-3 loss to No. 23 Oregon State and a win over host Southern Utah, 12-8, in the Canyon Park Classic, Friday. BYU defeated both teams in the same tournament last season.

In the first inning of the season, the Cougars found themselves in a 5-0 deficit after freshman Vanessa Iapala hit a two-out grand slam in her first collegiate at bat. After another Beaver home run in the second inning, a solo shot, the Cougars scored three unanswered runs to bring the game to 5-3, but could not complete the rally and lost 5-3.

Freshman Ianeta Lei smashed a two-run home run over center field in the fourth inning for her first career home run. Lei finished the game 2-3 with two RBI. Sophomore catcher Arron Layns drove in senior Brooke Cadiente in the sixth inning. Freshman Ashlyn Russell went 2-4 in her first game. BYU out hit Oregon State 8-6.

Freshman Brooke Boyce showed lots of potential pitching in relief for sophomore Niki Andersen (0-1). Boyce came in in the third inning and allowed no runs and only two hits in 5 1/3 innings in her collegiate debut.

"Boyce gave us a really gutsy performance facing a PAC-10 team in her first appearance," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We outplayed them after the second home run but we just couldn't get the key hit at the right time."

In game two against host Southern Utah, the Cougars again found themselves trailing by five runs but did not lose faith and rallied into extra innings to defeat the Thunderbirds 12-8.

"I told the team to not let down after our first game and play strong against Southern Utah who is a quality team," Eakin said.

Tralling 7-2 after five innings of play, the Cougars scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 7-7. Sophomore Debbie Dodds hit a two-run home run, the first career home run, to spark the rally. All-American Oli Keohohou added a home run, the 40th of her career, to finish off the inning. Both team were unable to score in the seventh to bring the game into overtime.

Sophomore Lauren Watson went 1-4 with two walks. Lei went 1-2 with two runs scored. Cadiente hit the go ahead run in the eighth.

Boyce (1-0) picked up the win in the final three innings on the mound. Senior transfer Mandy Flint relieved senior Cynthia Fallowfield and pitched three solid innings against her former team. Flint is the all-time strike out leader for thte Thunderbirds in only one season.

"We were pleased with the way we fought to overcome the lead in the second game today," Eakin. "Our freshman really played well today in their college debuts."

The Cougars will finish off the weekend at the tournament with games against Cal-Poly at 10 a.m. and St. Mary's College at 12:30 p.m. The Cougars defeated St. Mary's 11-4 in the final game of the Southern Utah Tournament last season.
