Cougars Drop Two to New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE -- Playing in its second weekend of conference competition, the BYU softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to New Mexico Friday, 5-0 and 9-3.

In game one, junior Maryon Dewitt (5-6) was outdueled by the Lobos' Danielle Cassara, who chalked up her record-setting 20th career shutout. The Cougars managed just three hits in the loss, led by Liz Smith's 2-for-3 performance.

In the second game, New Mexico's Cassara and Kelly Glass each went 4-for-4 to lead the Lobos to the 9-3 win and extend the team's winning streak to eight. BYU pitcher Meghann Pricer (4-9) was ousted in the second inning after allowing five runs to drop her sixth straight game. Catcher Cassie Martin, who returned last weekend following ankle surgery and was questionable after a pitch hit her foot Wednesday in practice, went 3-for-4 for the Cougars.

The Cougars fell to 9-16, 1-5 MWC, while the Lobos improved to 26-11, 4-0 MWC. BYU will face Colorado State Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
