Cougars Upset New Mexico in Final Homestand

PROVO -- Playing in its final home games of the season, the BYU softball team swept New Mexico in a doubleheader Saturday, winning, 4-3, and 6-2.

The Cougars came into the doubleheader as the clear underdog, having been swept by the Lobos earlier this season. New Mexico, which has led the conference for much of the season, started out the first game with a bang, scoring three quick runs and chasing BYU's Meghann Pricer out of the game after just one out. Cougar Maryon Dewitt entered the game in relief, and prcoeeded to allow the Lobos just three hits and no runs. Dewitt was helped by an explosive four-run fourth inning by the Cougars to edge the Lobos and earn her eighth win of the season. Outfielder Liz Smith knocked in two runs in her first game back from a concussion suffered two weeks ago against Utah, while designated hitter Jamie Kreipl tacked on two as well.

BYU carried its momentum into the second game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and adding four insurance runs in the fifth to secure the 6-2 win. Lindsay Jones got the win while Dewitt picked up her first save of the season. The Cougars rode a team-wide offensive assault which included multiple hits by four starters and four RBI from first baseman Mindy Hanson.

New Mexico fell to 32-17, 10-6 MWC, while the Cougars upped their season record to 15-24, 6-12 MWC. BYU will face in-state rival Utah next Saturday in a doubleheader before travelling to the inaugural Mountain West Conference tournament May 11-13.
