Cougars End Tourney on High Note

ARLINGTON -- The BYU softball team finished bracket play on a high note, defeating Louisiana Tech, 8-0, in its final game at the Arlington/ISUZU InterCollegiate Classic, Saturday. The Cougars lost to Northwestern State, 4-2, in the opening round of bracket play earlier in the day.

The first game of the day against Northwestern State was another close one for BYU as the two teams were tied 2-2 for most of the game until Northwestern State bunted in what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning, eventually winning, 4-2. Sophomore Brooke Cadiente provided the offense for the Cougars, going 2-3 with two solo homeruns.

BYU finished the tournament on a high note, pounding Louisiana Tech for the second time, 8-0. Freshman Oli Keohohou went 2-3 with a grand slam and five RBI to lead the Cougars. Liz Boydston went 2-3 with a double and two RBI while Kari Pringle went 2-3 with a double. Pitcher Meghann Pricer got the shutout and her first win of the season.

"We are an explosive offensive team but need to fine-tune some things," coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "It's early in the season and I know we'll get better."

BYU would have played another game at the tournament but that game would have been held on Sunday. The Cougars record moves to 3-7 on the year and they will next play at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Feb. 16-17.
