Cougars Win One, Lose Another Close One
TEMPE -- The BYU softball team split games on the second day of the Louisville Slugger Classic Saturday, beating Illinois State 5-2 but losing 4-3 in a tie breaker to No. 13 Iowa.
Against Illinois State, pitcher Meghann Pricer gave up two runs on only three hits while striking out three batters. Senior Becca Erickson hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning to put the Cougars up 2-0. The Redbirds closed the gap to 2-1 after the fourth inning, but BYU exploded for three runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded, senior Mindy Hanson singled in two runs to put the Cougars up 5-1. Illinois State scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough as BYU went on to win 5-2.
Playing No. 13 Iowa for the second time in the tournament, pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine went the distance for BYU, but the Cougars lost 4-3 in another tie breaker. BYU went up 2-0 and led 2-1 going into the fifth inning but the Hawkeyes scored two runs to go up 3-2, but the Cougars battled back and tied the game 3-3 in the seventh. In the tie breaker, Iowa bunted the runner to third and then scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hanson had two more RBI and sophomore Brooke Cadiente added another for BYU.
"I think we played really well," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "We are playing an extremely competitive schedule but that makes our team play better."
BYU's record moves to 5-10 on the year. The Cougars will next play March 1 in a doubleheader against Southern Utah in St. George, Utah.
