Cougars Win Final Two in Pool Play

SACRAMENTO -- A day after losing two one-run games, the BYU softball team rebounded to win its final two games in pool play, beating San Jose State 5-0 and Mississippi 6-0 Friday on the second day of the Sacramento State Capital Classic.

Against San Jose St., BYU got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a RBI-single by Oli Keohohou after which Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston scored on an error by the Spartan first baseman. In the second inning, senior Becca Erickson increased the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run. In the third, Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly tripled down the right-field line and later scored on a Keohohou double. Senior Jackie Ellis hit a solo home run in the fourth inning as BYU went on to win 5-0. Pitcher Meghann Pricer got the shutout, scattering eight hits while striking out six en route to her fifth win of the season.

"I'm really proud of the mental toughness of the girls," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "It takes a lot of guts to come out and play early in the morning after playing late the previous night and not getting a lot of rest."

Against Mississippi, Oli Keohohou hit a two-run home run to give BYU a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Cougars put three more runs on the board in the sixth, one on a sacrifice fly from Ellis and two more on a homer by Erickson to increase the lead to 5-0. In the seventh inning, Hodgen-Kelly singled, advanced to second on a Kari Pringle hit and then scored on an error by the Rebels right fielder. Pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine gave up only four hits while striking out five, getting the 6-0 shutout win.

BYU's record improves to 13-15 on the year. The Sacramento State Capital Classic continues tomorrow with double elimination bracket play against a team yet to be determined.
