Cougars Improve to .500 With Wins
SACRAMENTO -- With a 7-2 win against Miami (OH) and a 10-1 win over Louisville in bracket play at the Sacramento State Capital Classic Saturday, the BYU softball team's record improved to .500 for the first time this season. The Cougars advanced in one semifinal to play No. 12 Iowa at 9 a.m. Sunday, but will not compete because of the no-Sunday play rule.
In the opening round of bracket play, the Cougars used a four-run first inning and a three-run third inning en route to the 7-2 victory. BYU got a two-RBI single from sophomore Brooke Cadiente and a two-run homer from junior Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston to get on the board early. In the third, Mindy Hanson had a RBI-double and Becca Erickson, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had a two-RBI double. Meghann Pricer pitched three innings, giving up no runs on three hits, but sophomore Cynthia Polk got her first win of the season, going the final four innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.
"I'm really happy with what we are doing offensively," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said, "but I know we are just scratching the surface of what we are capable of doing."
Against Louisville, BYU again got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning when Cadiente drew a bases-loaded walk and Pierce-Boydston hit a RBI-single back to the pitcher. The Cardinals got their only run of the game in the fifth on a RBI-single from Keola Calderon. Leading 2-1 going into the sixth, BYU exploded for eight runs on five hits to end the game after six innings. Five of the eight runs came from an Angie Christiansen bases-loaded triple and a two-RBI single by Kari Pringle. Pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine got the win, giving up one run on eight hits while striking out seven.
BYU's record moves to 15-15 on the year. The Cougars will play Utah State in a doubleheader Wednesday in Logan, Utah, beginning at 1 p.m.
