Cougars Lose Two Close Games

LINCOLN -- The BYU (20-19) softball team dropped two close games to the University of Nebraska Tuesday, losing 4-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, neither team was able to score in the first three innings. The game was delayed for 2 hours and 40 minutes because of rain and then resumed with BYU scoring one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston. The Huskers came right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win. Nebraska had five hits, including three home runs off starting pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (10-12).

In game two, Nebraska got on the board early, scoring one run in the bottom of the second, but BYU came back and tied the game in the top of the third. The Cougars took a 3-1 lead, scoring two runs in the fourth but the Huskers knotted the at 3-3, scoring one run in their half of the fourth and fifth innings. Peaches James had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh to give Nebraska the 4-3 victory. Brooke Cadiente hit her fifth home run of the year while Jackie Ellis hit her first of the season. Meghann Pricer pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Jill Roberts (0-1) got the loss, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up one run on two hits.

BYU moves to 20-19, 3-2 on the season while Nebraska improves to 35-10 on the year. The Cougars stay in Nebraska to play a doubleheader at Creighton, beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
