Offense Comes Alive in Sweep of Rebels

PROVO -- The BYU (29-22, 8-5) softball team's offense came alive Saturday as the Cougars swept UNLV (25-25, 6-10) 7-1 and 10-2 at Gail Miller Field.

A lead off home run by freshman Oli Keohohou, her 19th on the year, got the Cougars going in the first. Four batters later, sophomore Brooke Cadiente belted a two-run homer, her ninth of the season, to put BYU up 3-0. In the second, Liz Smith hit a triple, driving in Angie Christiansen and Keohohou. In the fourth, BYU scored two runs as the Rebels committed two errors in the inning to go up 7-0.

UNLV got on the board in the fifth with back-to-back doubles from Melissa Inouye and Marisa Martinez, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars went on to win 7-1. Meghann Pricer (11-5) got the win, giving up four hits and one run while striking out five.

"I'm really proud of the team," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "They played like I expected them to two weeks ago. With our backs against the wall, we came through."

In game two, Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston singled to drive in Smith in the first inning to put the Cougars up 1-0. BYU increased its lead to 2-0 on a RBI-single from Jackie Ellis in the third. In the fourth inning, Linda Garza hit a two-run home run for UNLV to tie the game at 2-2.

The Cougars did more damage in their half of the fourth, scoring eight runs on six hits and one costly Rebel error. Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly started the spurt with a bases loaded RBI-single followed by a two-RBI single from Pierce-Boydston. Mindy Hanson then singled in another run to put BYU up 6-2.

With the bases loaded, Ellis hit a single to right field, but the ball skipped past the UNLV fielder and rolled to the fence allowing everyone to score, including Ellis. The game was called after the top of the fifth because of the eight-run rule. Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (14-14) got the win, giving up only two hits and two runs while striking out two.

The Cougars continue action next week with four games against the University of Utah. On Friday, BYU will travel to Salt Lake City for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. On Saturday, the two teams will play in Provo at Gail Miller Field at noon.
