Seventh-Inning Rally Propels Cougars to 4-3 Win
Albuquerque, N.M. (May 10, 2001) - Freshman Oli Keohohou scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bunt by Liz Smith and a New Mexico error as the BYU (33-23) softball team prevailed, 4-3, to advance to the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
"Our kids played great," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "They played excellent defense and executed superbly."
In the first inning, sophomore Brooke Cadiente put the Cougars up 1-0, driving in Keohohou, the MWC Freshman of the Year and all-conference selection, with a double to right center. In the second inning, Becca Erickson put BYU up 2-0 with her seventh home run of the season.
A sacrifice fly by junior Kari Pringle scored Cadiente and put the Cougars up 3-0. The Lobos cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth inning when pinch hitter Michelle Carter drove in two runs with a double. In the top of the seventh, Kelly Glass stole home, dodging the Angie Christiansen tag, to tie the game at 3-3.
Keohohou singled to start the bottom of the seventh inning, setting up the late-inning heroics. Smith laid down a bunt but the New Mexico defender threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Keohohou to score from first base, giving BYU the 4-3 victory.
The Cougars face the winner of the Utah and Colorado State game Friday at 4:30 p.m.
