Successful Season Ends at NCAA Regional
Palo Alto, Calif. (May 17, 2001) - The BYU (35-26) softball team ended a successful season in which it won both the regular season and conference tournament with a 4-2 loss to Hofstra and a 3-1 loss to Nebraska in its first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament.
The Cougars got on the board early when Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston knocked in Oli Keohohou and Liz Smith in the top of the first inning to put BYU up 2-0. Hofstra responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run by Amanda Hallaway.
The Pride scored another run in the second inning when Mari Shepard scored on a wild pitch. Hofstra added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a RBI-double from LaMeka Anderson. Megan Pricer (14-7) got the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up three runs on two hits. Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits. Kelly Blois went the distance for Hofstra, giving up two runs on seven hits, but BYU managed no runs after the first inning.
"It's disappointing the way the game ended," BYU head coach Mary Kay Amicone said, "but its been a heck of a season for us."
In the first game of the day, both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Nebraska scored two runs off two hits and one BYU error. Danelle Arnold doubled to center field and then scored when Becca Erickson overthrew first base on a ground ball from Leigh Suhr. Suhr advanced to second on the error and then to third on a single by Nicole Trimboli, before stealing home to give the Huskers a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars got their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly singled in Brooke Cadiente from second, cutting the lead in half at 2-1. Kari Pringle was thrown out at third on the play as she was scampering back to the bag to end the inning and the BYU scoring opportunity.
Nebraska's Amanda Buchholz walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Buchholz later scored on a throwing error by Erickson, putting the Huskers up 3-1. DeWitt-Wallentine (17-16) pitched six innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five Nebraska batters. Leigh Ann Walker (22-6) pitched four innings for the Huskers, giving up one run on two hits. Peaches James got the save, going three innings and allowing only one hit.
BYU ends the season with a 35-26 record and an 11-6 conference record.
