BYU Loses to No. 7 Cal and Sacramento State
SANTA BARBARA -- The BYU women's softball team lost to No. 7 Cal-Berkeley 0-1, and Sacramento State 2-4 in the first day of the "Softball By the Beach" Invitational, Friday. The losses drop the Cougars to 5-8 on the season.
In the first game, Ariel Capra (2-1) pitched an excellent game holding the No. 7 Cal to only one run, but picked up her first loss of the season. BYU lost to the Golden Bears exactly one week ago at the Desert Breeze Classic, 2-5 but couldn't come up with enough offense to avenge the loss.
Playing Sacramento State immediately after Cal, the Cougars were unable to overcome fatigue as they lost 2-4. Liz Boydston went 2-3 with a solo home run and a double. Freshman Niki Andersen (0-3) took the loss for the Cougars.
"Capra pitched really well for us today," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "We been leaving a lot of runners on base and haven't been able to string together a rally.
The Cougars finish up a long two weeks of traveling on Saturday facing Providence for the first time ever at 10 a.m. The Cougars play Santa Clara at 12:30 to finish off a long week, playing seven road games in only four days.
