Boydston's Two Home Runs Help Cougars Snap Slump

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team split their doubleheader against the University of New Mexico at Gail Miller Field, Saturday. The win in the second game snapped a five-game losing streak in conference. The Cougars are now 24-16, 3-5 while New Mexico moves to 11-20-1, 3-3.

In game on of the doubleheader, New Mexico jumped to a quick 5-0 lead after two home runs in the first two innings. Cassie Chavez hit a solo shot in the first at bat of the game and Brooke Chaffee hit a three-run shot in the second. BYU responded with five runs of their own starting with senior Liz Boydston's two-run shot to bring in teammate Kate Walker in the third. Walker brought in freshman catcher Arron Layns in the fourth. Boydston earned her third RBI of the game with a double in the fifth and senior Kari Pringle brought in Boydston to tie the game 5-5.

New Mexico hit their third home run of the game, a two run blast in the sixth inning by Michelle Carter to take a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs and one runner on, Pringle hit a double off the fence to score Cynthia Fallowfield. Liz VanderLinden was hit by a pitch and Megan Johnson walked to load the bases. Power-hitter Oli Keohohou had the bases loaded for the second time in the game and flied out both times. Sophomore Ariel Capra (8-4) picked up the loss while Niki Andersen pitched six innings after going 16 the previous night.

"I believe in Keohohou 100 percent," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "I'll take her in that position and put my paycheck on her."

With two out, in a 0-0 contest, in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two, the Cougars reeled off six straight hits to capped by a two-run home run by Boydston, her second of the day, to take a 6-0 lead. Walker hit a single to get things going and advanced to third on a fielding error, the Lobos first of the day. Megan Johnson hit an RBI single to score Walker. Keohohou, a sophomore, hit a double to score Johnson. VanderLinden hit a triple, her fourth of the season, to score Keohohou. Freshman Lauren Watson singled in VanderLinden finished by Boydston's eighth home run of the season. Fallowfield (10-6) reached the double-digit win mark for the first time in her BYU career with her second shutout of the season.

"Softball is a game of momentum, " Amicone said. "One error turned the tide of the game and perhaps our conference regular season by directing us into a positive direction."

The Cougars will play doubleheaders at Utah State on Thursday and at Utah on Saturday next week. The next home game for the Cougars will be April 19 at 5 p.m. against San Diego State. That game will be broadcast on KBYU TV.
