Keohohou's 17th Home Run Helps Cougars Split

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team split a double head against San Diego State 2-10, 6-3 at Gail Miller Field, Friday. The Cougars improve to 27-19, 4-8 on the season and San Diego in now 34-20-1, 9-3. The Cougars host UNLV tomorrow at noon in a doubleheader available on webcast.

In game one of the doubleheader, San Diego State scored first with a run in the third inning. Senior Kari Pringle hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. The Aztecs tied it up in the fifth on a Cougar error. Both teams were unable to score to send the game in extra innings. With two out and bases loaded in the top of the eight, the Aztecs reeled off four straight hits and eventually scored eight runs to seal the win 10-2.

Freshman Niki Andersen (7-8) picked up the loss for the Cougars. Senior Liz VanderLinden went 2-3 with one run scored. Pringle finished the game 2-5 with two RBI. MWC Pitcher of the Week Bre DeSanta picked up the win to improve to 13-8

In game two on KBYU, the Aztecs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. BYU responded with two solo-home runs in the second. All-American Oli Keohohou hit her 17th home run of the season. She was followed by freshman Lauren Watson's third home run of the season. In the fourth inning, Kate Walker brought in Watson on a single up the middle. VanderLinden drove in Walker as the Cougars took a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, pitcher Cynthia Fallowfield hit the fence for a two-run double to help the Cougars build a five-run lead 6-1. The Aztecs scored two runs in the sixth with no outs to cut the lead to three, but the Aztecs were got any closer. Fallowfield picked up a save in relief for Capra (9-4).

We regrouped well from the first game to play a solid second game," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said.

The second game will be re-broadcast on KBYU channel 11 at 11 p.m. tonight. Set those VCR's to record your own personal copy, not to be distributed for profit.
